If you’re thinking of having a whole-house remodel or even a kitchen or bath remodel in 2018, you’re almost out of time to secure a place in line. The busiest design-build teams are already booked through the summer and are signing contracts for work that won’t happen until fall or even into 2019. It is worth the wait, though, and here’s why:

Time to Plan

When you work with a builder or contractor who isn’t very busy, not only may there be reasons for that beyond an industry lull, but you’ll probably be forced into making decisions quickly, choosing from materials that are readily available. When you slow down and take time to plan – giving yourself six to nine months to actually begin the work of your remodel – it gives your builder time to order unique, hard-to-find, or custom-made materials to create the exact look you want.

Time to Decide

Remodeling your home is a huge investment. If you choose to work with a contractor who can “squeeze you in” next week, you’ll be under pressure to make rash decisions. When that happens, you often end up with changes you haven’t really had time to think through. You may even get the feeling that the remodel made things worse.

Time to Choose

When you know that it will be six to nine months before you want the project begin, you can take the time to vet your contractor and choose someone who will work with you to achieve your dream. Ask yourself:

  • Do they listen to my ideas and vision?
  • Do they help me plan and consider challenges I haven’t thought about?
  • Do they collaborate with me to ensure that we achieve my goals within my budget?
  • Is the person or company highly recommended?
  • Do I feel good about the investment I’m making in my home?

At Nip Tuck Remodeling, we believe that the planning phase is the most important part of any design-remodel project. We appreciate that we’re booked out far enough that we have time to work with you, get to know you and your family, and get to understand how you use your home and what you want to be able to do with it.

As I write in the introduction of my upcoming book, Happiness, Guaranteed, “Don’t rush this process. You’ve waited a long time already. Taking a little extra time to get it right will have a huge payoff for many years to come. We will be renovating some of the most personal spaces in your home. It is a significant investment of time and resources. So, make certain it is completely right for you.”

Take time to plan and decide. Choose well. And dream big!
